April 2010 Workshop – What is Sustainable Development??? What can it do for me and for Sheffield?
Introduction by Professor Dave Applebaum
We have been privileged to work with Professor Dave Applebaum, Head of the Probability & Statistics Deparment at The University of Sheffield, who is largely responsible for initiating this workshop after attending our October 2009 Climatewalk workshop in association with the New Economics Foundation. Please note that with Dave Applebaum’s approval we have editted his introductory talk to outline Action for Involvement’s activities, aims objectives and purpose.
Sheffield – My Plans for a Thriving and Low Carbon City
Andy Nolan, Director of Sustainable Development, Sheffield City Council talks about his role and how his understanding of this role and his personal vision influences his decisions for Sustainable Sheffield, priorities for carbon reduction, how he intends to make it happen and balance the issues to reflect Citywide resources including the role he envisages for our private, public and voluntary sector bodies as well as individual volunteers.
The Buck Stops Here: Grassroots and the power of local action
Ian Rotherham, Reader at Sheffield Hallam University talks about the separation between people, communities and the environment which he correctly anticipated as being an indictment of our attitude to the environment, climate change and use of planetary resources. Ian also voices his concerns regarding the linguistics of sustainable development, sustainability, ethical and moral responsibility to our Planet’s bio-diversity.
